At 2,380 metres, Sunny Peak is located in the Pinnacle Hiking area in the southern Monashee Mountains. Unlike some of the surrounding mountains, it does not have any permanent snow or small glaciers. The views from Sunny Peak are spectacular.

Sunny Peak

The Hike

Begin by driving to the trail-head for Monashee Lake (see South Pinnacle Traverse for details). From Monashee Lake, I could see the Middle Pinnacle (centre of the photo below).

To reach Sunny Peak, I traversed around the left side of the lake.

Monashee Lake

As I hiked around Monashee Lake, I followed the creek flowing into Monashee Lake. After passing a small tarn, I traversed toward the left across a flat plateau. From here, I could see Sunny Peak. As I ascended toward Sunny Peak, I could see a clearer view of the North and Middle Pinnacles (pictured below).

North Pinnacle

The North Pinnacle...

North Pinnacle

After cresting the ridge to Sunny Peak, I could see Mount Severide on the other side (pictured below).

Mount Severide

Below Mount Severide, I could see Rioux Lake.

Rioux Lake

Once atop the ridge, I followed the obvious line to the summit. The cairn is visible in the photo below. While it looks steep from a distance, it's a fairly straightforward hike to the top.

Final Thoughts

Sunny Peak is an excellent class 2 day hike or an overnight backpack. Sunny Peak provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. From Sunny Peak, you can see the routes for the North Pinnacle, Middle Pinnacle and South Pinnacle. You can also see the route for the East Ridge for Mount Severide. With views of Rioux Lake, you can also see the route to goat col to pass over the East Ridge of Mount Severide.
